The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for the June 20 election in Ekiti State, Wole Oluyede, has criticised the state government’s allocation to the health sector, describing it as insufficient to meet the needs of residents.
Speaking during a radio interview in Ado-Ekiti, Oluyede stressed that access to quality and affordable healthcare is a core responsibility of any government. He pledged that, if elected, his administration would generate up to N72 billion annually from the sector, although he did not provide details of how this would be achieved.
He also raised concerns over worsening economic conditions and insecurity in the state, promising to introduce policies aimed at stimulating growth, creating jobs, and attracting investment.
Oluyede maintained that his political ambition is not tied to any godfather, attributing his support to divine backing and the people. He pointed to the recent restoration rally in Ikere-Ekiti as a sign of increasing grassroots support.
On zoning and fairness, he argued that the Ekiti South Senatorial District has been marginalised, noting that no governor has emerged from the area since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999. According to him, past governors—including Niyi Adebayo, Kayode Fayemi, Ayodele Fayose, Segun Oni, and Biodun Oyebanji—have all come from the Central and North districts, making a strong case for power rotation to the South.
A former member of both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Oluyede said he joined the PDP due to concerns about internal party democracy in his previous platforms, adding that his cross-party experience has strengthened his political base.
He outlined key priorities of his campaign to include improved security, better education with a focus on science and technology, agricultural development for food security, and enhanced welfare for civil servants and pensioners.
Oluyede also promised to establish an Independent Power Plant to ensure steady electricity supply across the state.
Reaffirming his commitment to issue-based campaigning, he called on voters to support his candidacy, assuring them of effective governance if elected.
