The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Jos has officially declared an indefinite strike, citing unpaid salaries as the primary reason.
The announcement came on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, following complaints from lecturers who did not receive their March salaries and the Earned Academic Allowance.
The union has instructed all members to immediately suspend lectures, examinations, and participation in official meetings. According to ASUU UNIJOS leadership, the decision was taken after approvals from both the National Executive Council and the branch’s local congress.
“After following due process, we hereby request all members to abstain from lectures, exams, and statutory meetings, as our salaries for March 2026 remain unpaid despite our patience,” the union stated.
ASUU emphasized that the delay was not due to any internal issues within the university, as the bursary department had completed its responsibilities. The union attributes the payment holdup to the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation.
The union also cautioned that continued delays could disrupt the stability of the academic system and confirmed that a monitoring team will be deployed to ensure full compliance with the strike directive.
