Iyabo Obasanjo has announced her withdrawal from the Ogun State governorship contest, citing the need to promote unity and strengthen political collaboration ahead of the elections.
In a statement made public, the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo said her decision followed wide-ranging consultations with party leaders, political allies, and supporters across the state. She noted that stepping aside was a strategic move aimed at fostering cohesion within the party and improving its chances at the polls.
According to her, personal ambition must sometimes give way to the collective interest, stressing that a united front remains critical to achieving electoral success and delivering effective governance in Ogun State.
Obasanjo also used the opportunity to congratulate Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Senator Yayi, describing him as a seasoned politician with the experience and capacity to lead the state. She expressed confidence in his ability to drive development and uphold good governance if elected.
She further urged her supporters and political associates to throw their weight behind Adeola’s candidacy, emphasizing the importance of continuity, stability, and shared vision in the state’s political journey.
Political analysts believe her withdrawal could significantly reshape the dynamics of the governorship race, potentially consolidating support around Senator Adeola and reducing internal rivalry within the party.
Despite stepping down from the race, Obasanjo reaffirmed her commitment to public service and pledged to continue contributing to initiatives that promote development, social welfare, and inclusive governance in Ogun State.
