In the Nigerian political landscape, especially among governors, some put in less effort during their second tenure, as they feel they just need to finish their term and leave office. But for Governor Douye Diri, the pace at which he started work in the oil-rich Bayelsa State is what he is sustaining right till the very end. Governor Diri has shut the mouths of naysayers with his work ethic and how he is working round the clock to provide amenities for his people and give them the good dividends of democracy.
While many of his peer governors would have been winding down and looking for ways to install their successors leaving governance to suffer, Diri has stood firm and promised to work until his very last day in office, delivering quality work for his people. The visit of President Tinubu last week to commission key projects across the state shows the level of innovation the governor has been thinking of. With power having been expunged from the exclusive legislative list to concurrent list to allow states to generate, transmit and distribute their own electricity, Senator Diri’s foresight remains impeccable. This was demonstrated by the launch of a newly built state-owned 60-megawatt gas turbine at Opolo-Elebele, which will ensure the state generates electricity and also reduce its over-reliance on GenCos and the national grid.
Also, the commissioning of the 60-kilometre dual carriageway from Onopa to the LNG axis, as well as a 630-metre bridge linking Angiama to Oporoma in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, further shows his work rate and how he has prioritized infrastructural renewal across the state. Governor Diri has also disclosed that despite having limited time left in office, everything he has set in motion for the state will be concluded before he bows out in style on May 29, 2027.
