The Lagos State Government has instructed banks, filling stations, eateries, and similar businesses to allow members of the public to use their restroom facilities, in a renewed push to eliminate open defecation across the state.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the directive on Saturday, highlighting the need for stronger collaboration between the government and private sector to improve sanitation.
He stated that the government has already provided 1,710 functional public toilets across Lagos, strategically located for residents and visitors. Despite this progress, he noted that additional support is needed to meet the sanitation needs of the state’s growing population.
According to Wahab, making private restrooms accessible to the public will significantly expand access to sanitation facilities and reinforce efforts to end open defecation.
He added that enforcement of environmental laws has been stepped up, with offenders being arrested and prosecuted in line with existing regulations.
Describing sanitation as a shared responsibility, the commissioner urged residents and business owners to cooperate with the initiative, stressing that collective action is key to maintaining a cleaner, safer, and more livable Lagos.
