The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has publicly endorsed the state’s Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, as the likely successor to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu ahead of the 2027 elections.
Obasa made the declaration on Thursday while hosting Hamzat at his official residence in Ikeja, describing him as the preferred candidate to take over leadership of Lagos State.
The deputy governor’s visit forms part of his ongoing consultations with stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as political alignments gradually build toward the next electoral cycle.
Speaking during the meeting, Obasa commended Hamzat’s contributions to infrastructure development in the state and his loyalty to the ruling party. He stressed that party members are united in their support and determined to secure victory at the polls.
“I just returned from Abuja, and the message is consistent — Dr Obafemi Hamzat is the next governor of Lagos State. You have shown unwavering loyalty and competence. We stand with you and will work to ensure electoral success,” Obasa said.
In his response, Hamzat thanked the Speaker for the endorsement and acknowledged his political influence and legislative experience. He emphasized that his consultations are driven by a broader vision for the state rather than personal ambition.
“Lagos is a collective project. My engagement with stakeholders is focused on continuity, innovation, and inclusive development for our people,” he stated.
