Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has ended months of political uncertainty by formally defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), silencing widespread speculation about his next political move.
Mohammed made the announcement at a stakeholders’ meeting on Saturday, where he was officially presented with an APM membership card, party constitution, and flag cementing his transition to the relatively smaller opposition platform.
The governor framed the move as a calculated, strategic decision, describing the APM as a stable and legally unencumbered platform through which he and his loyalists can continue their public service commitments.
“After extensive and wide consultations, we have taken a firm and strategic decision to join APM,” Mohammed told party stakeholders, while also expressing gratitude to the PDP for the role it played in shaping his political career.
“We remain grateful for this history and opportunity,” he added.
The declaration effectively draws the curtain on a prolonged guessing game triggered by the deepening leadership crisis within the PDP. Prior to Saturday’s announcement, political watchers had tipped Mohammed to pitch his tent with either the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
However, talks between the Bauchi PDP chapter and the APC reportedly collapsed on April 18 after both parties failed to reach an agreement on a power-sharing arrangement. State PDP chairman Sama’ila Burga subsequently confirmed that the governor and the party were exploring other options — a hint that ultimately pointed to the APM.
With his defection now official, Mohammed’s political focus is expected to shift toward his rumoured senatorial ambitions and ongoing consultations with prominent opposition figures, including Labour Party’s Peter Obi and former Kano governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.
