A federal lawmaker who has held his seat for nearly two decades has stirred public debate after an emotional video surfaced showing him in tears, appealing to constituents to hand him a fifth consecutive term in the House of Representatives.
Hon. Audu Mustapha Ganga, who represents the Magumeri Federal Constituency in Borno State, made the teary plea before his people, invoking his humble origins as a reason to be given another chance.
“You know I am from a poor background, but I was able to do many things for you,” he said in the now-viral clip. “I promise to give you better representation if given another chance.”
Ganga, who has occupied the seat since 2007, now faces stiff competition, with at least six rivals already purchasing Expression of Interest and Nomination forms ahead of the primary.
The appeal, however, has been met with a mixed and largely skeptical reception back home.
“You now know that you came from a poor background after disrespecting your leaders,” constituent Abubakar Hassan fired back. “You know the governor will not spare you.”
Others were equally blunt. “No food for lazy man,” wrote Mu’azu Hassan, alluding to the economic hardships many in the constituency continue to face.
Muhammad Abba Kura dismissed the display altogether, calling it “crocodile tears.”
Not everyone was critical, however. Supporter Lawan Modu defended the lawmaker, arguing that “Hon. Ganga has impacted the lives of youth and women through empowerment and job creation,” and that showing emotion “is not a sign of weakness.”
Whether the tears will translate into votes remains to be seen, but the backlash suggests that for many constituents, sentiment alone may not be enough after 16 years.
