The Yusufu Bala Usman Institute in Zaria, Kaduna State, has announced the passing of its Chairman, Dr. Samuel Olusegun Osoba, who died peacefully at his home in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, in the early hours of Wednesday, May 14, 2026. He was 92 years old.
The announcement was made in an official statement titled “Notice of Passing of our Chairman, Dr. Samuel Olusegun Osoba,” signed by the Institute’s Director, Norma Perchonock.
Born in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Dr. Osoba was widely regarded as a distinguished scholar who devoted his life to teaching, research, and public enlightenment. His academic work focused on exposing the workings of capitalism and neo-colonialism in Nigeria, and on charting pathways toward economic and political liberation for ordinary Nigerians.
The Institute described him as “a rare scholar whose whole life was dedicated to teaching and research,” noting that his writings ranged from academic books and papers to newspaper columns that reached broad audiences across the country.
Among his most notable contributions was co-authoring, alongside his close colleague Yusufu Bala Usman, The Minority Report and Draft Constitution for the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1976 — a document that has continued to shape constitutional debates in the country for decades.
“Segun is gone but he has left an enduring legacy and a shining example for patriotic Nigerians to emulate,” the Institute’s statement read.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced and will be communicated by the family in due course.
