The Kano State Ministry of Education has declared an Eid-el-Kabir holiday for all public and private primary and secondary schools in the state, covering both boarding and day institutions.
The announcement was made on Wednesday through a statement by the ministry’s Director of Public Enlightenment, Misbahu Yakasai.
Boarding Schools
Boarding school students are to proceed on holiday from Saturday, May 23, 2026, and are expected back on campus by Sunday, May 31, 2026. The ministry called on parents and guardians to pick up their children on the stipulated closing date and ensure their prompt return when schools reopen.
Day Schools
Students in day schools will begin their Sallah break a day earlier, on Friday, May 22, 2026, and are scheduled to resume academic activities on Monday, June 1, 2026.
The ministry urged school authorities, parents, and guardians to adhere strictly to the approved schedule, emphasizing that timely return from the break is essential to keeping the academic calendar on track.
The Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ali Makoda, extended goodwill wishes to students, teachers, parents, and the broader education community, urging all to use the festive period as an opportunity to promote peace, discipline, and good conduct.
Notably, the ministry’s statement contained a factual inconsistency, referring to the celebration interchangeably as both Eid al-Kabir and Eid al-Fitr — two distinct Islamic festivals — raising questions about the accuracy of the official communication.
