The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has mobilised intelligence and security assets to secure the release of former Director of Defence Information, Major General Rabe Abubakar (retd.), and his wife, who were abducted by suspected terrorists in Katsina State.
The retired military officer and his wife were kidnapped on Saturday in Matazu Local Government Area of the state while travelling for the Eid al-Kabir celebrations.
A senior military officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that security forces have intensified efforts and are working tirelessly to rescue the victims.
“We are working round the clock to rescue him,” the officer said.
Following the incident, the Katsina State Commissioner of Police, Ali Umar Fage, visited the scene and directed the deployment of additional personnel and operational resources to strengthen the ongoing search-and-rescue mission.
The police command assured residents that every effort was being made to rescue the victims unharmed and bring those responsible for the attack to justice.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, the Katsina State Police Command confirmed that the attack occurred at about 11:00 a.m. on May 30, 2026.
According to the statement, armed bandits attacked a red Peugeot 406 vehicle along the Karaduwa-Matazu Road in Matazu Local Government Area. During the attack, the driver, identified as Abdullahi Sa’id, sustained a gunshot wound to his right arm.
The assailants abducted two occupants of the vehicle, identified as Abdullahi Batsari and Amina Abdullahi, before security operatives arrived at the scene.
The police said the Divisional Police Officer in Matazu promptly mobilised officers to the location, secured the area, and arranged medical treatment for the injured driver.
Reports indicate that Major General Abubakar and his wife were travelling from Abuja to Katsina for the Sallah festivities when their vehicle was intercepted by armed men along the Katsina-Matazu route. The attackers reportedly whisked the couple away to an unknown destination, while the driver managed to escape despite suffering a gunshot injury.
Security agencies have since intensified efforts to locate the victims and ensure their safe return.
