The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested a suspected arms and logistics supplier allegedly linked to bandit, kidnapping and terrorist networks operating across parts of northern Nigeria.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, said the suspect had been on the command’s wanted list since 2023 before he was finally apprehended in a carefully coordinated intelligence-led operation.
According to the police chief, operatives tracked and arrested the suspect on Tuesday while he was travelling along the Abuja-Kaduna Highway.
Items recovered from him included 81 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition for AK-47 rifles and 100 rounds of 7.62mm belted ammunition designed for a General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG).
Sanusi disclosed that the suspect was also wanted by several security agencies across North-Central states for his alleged involvement in supplying arms and other logistics to criminal groups.
The operation further led to the arrest of the suspect’s sister, who investigators believe played an active role in the illegal ammunition distribution network.
According to the commissioner, the woman is married to a wanted bandit kingpin currently on the run and allegedly involved in criminal activities across Kaduna and Niger states.
“She has been assisting in the movement and supply of ammunition to her brother, who subsequently sells them to terrorists and bandits,” Sanusi said.
Preliminary investigations, he added, have uncovered links between the suspects and a wider network of arms dealers and logistics providers supporting terrorist and bandit groups operating in Kaduna, Niger and communities bordering the FCT.
In a separate development, the police command also arrested two suspected members of a notorious “one chance” robbery syndicate.
Sanusi said the suspects were apprehended by operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) during a routine patrol along the Giri-Lugbe Road on May 15.
The officers reportedly spotted a young woman crying for help and stopped to investigate. The victim informed them that she had just been robbed by suspected “one chance” operators who dispossessed her of her valuables before abandoning her.
Acting swiftly, the patrol team launched a pursuit and intercepted a blue Volkswagen Golf with registration number SKK 567 AG carrying two suspects believed to be connected to the robbery.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of a laptop, an iPhone, a laptop charger, two knives and a pair of scissors.
The commissioner reiterated the command’s commitment to combating violent crimes and strengthening security across the Federal Capital Territory.
He urged residents to remain alert and promptly report suspicious activities, persons or movements to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency communication channels.
Sanusi assured residents that the police would continue intelligence-driven operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and safeguarding lives and property within the FCT.
