Five persons have lost their lives, while 12 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a lone road crash along the Enugu–Abakaliki Highway in Ebonyi State.
The accident was confirmed by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), which said the incident occurred on Friday, June 5, at Edema Bridge, Nkalagu, in Ishielu Local Government Area.
According to the FRSC Sector Commander in Ebonyi State, Daniel Asanya, the crash involved a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus with registration number RSH 231 XE, which was travelling from Abakaliki to Enugu at the time of the incident.
The vehicle reportedly carried 17 passengers—12 males and five females—when it crashed.
Asanya disclosed that four males and one female child died on the spot, while eight males and four females sustained injuries.
He attributed the accident to speeding, warning motorists to exercise caution, especially along sections of the Enugu–Abakaliki Highway where construction and maintenance work are ongoing.
Items recovered from the crash site included personal belongings such as mobile phones, sack bags, and a quarter bag of rice.
The injured victims were taken to Annunciation Hospital Emene for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased have been deposited in the morgue.
The FRSC further urged drivers to obey traffic rules, reduce speed limits in construction zones, and remain vigilant to prevent further loss of lives on the highway.
