The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported a 27 percent reduction in road traffic crashes and a 22 percent decline in crash victims during the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir celebration compared to the 2025 festive period.
The Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja.
He described the outcome as one of the agency’s most notable operational achievements in recent years, attributing it to improved traffic management strategies, sustained public enlightenment campaigns, stricter enforcement, and enhanced emergency response operations.
According to the operational report, crashes during the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir Special Patrol dropped from 191 in 2025 to 142 in 2026.
The number of persons involved in road crashes also reduced from 1,364 in 2025 to 1,064 in 2026, while injuries declined by 25.4 percent, falling from 576 to 430 within the period under review.
Ohaeri explained that the improved figures were achieved through strategic deployment of personnel and operational equipment across major highways nationwide.
He noted that the corps carried out round-the-clock patrols, intelligence-driven surveillance, motorised patrol operations, rapid rescue response, traffic calming measures, stakeholder collaboration, and sustained public awareness campaigns.
These efforts, he said, helped ensure safer travel conditions for millions of Nigerians who travelled before, during, and after the Sallah celebrations.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, commended the dedication and professionalism of personnel, Special Marshals, and partner agencies involved in the operation.
He said the results demonstrated that consistent enforcement, planning, and cooperation among stakeholders could significantly reduce road crashes and their impact across the country.
Shehu also appreciated motorists who complied with traffic rules and safety advisories during the festive season.
He reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to strengthening road safety interventions, improving stakeholder engagement, and enhancing operational efficiency to further reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities nationwide, while urging Nigerians to sustain safe driving habits beyond festive periods.
