The Ilamuren kingmakers in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, have nominated five princes to fill the vacant Awujale throne, forwarding their names to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for final selection.
The kingmakers, led by the Olisa, Rasheed Adeoye Adesanya, submitted the nominations in a letter to the governor, citing Section 4(2) of the Chiefs Law 1957 and the customary law governing the selection and succession to the Awujale of Ijebuland.
The five nominees are Prince Ademorin Aliu Kuye, Prince Isiaq Ayodele Adewale Adekoya (also known as Eleruja), Prince Onabanjo Abimbola John, Prince Oluwaseun Waheed Omopenu Onanuga, and Prince Olabode Onanuga.
Adesanya, who heads the Ilamuren-in-Council, said he convened several meetings to deliberate on the selection before arriving at the shortlist.
He explained that the applicable declaration requires kingmakers to either unanimously agree on a single candidate or forward preferred names to the state government for a final decision. In this case, five names were submitted.
“I have also considered the overall interests of Ijebu-Ode and the chieftaincy law of Ogun State, and to forestall delays in the nomination process, I am recommending five qualified princes whose antecedents and experience will bring the exalted position to greater achievements for Ijebu land, Ogun State, and Nigeria,” Adesanya wrote.
