Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has declared satisfaction with the conduct of Saturday’s governorship election, describing the exercise as peaceful and noting encouraging voter turnout across the state.
The governor made the remarks after casting his vote alongside his wife at Polling Unit 003, Oyebanji’s Compound, RA 06, in Ekiti West Local Government Area.
Oyebanji said reports from across the state indicated that voting was progressing smoothly and that residents had responded positively to calls for mass participation.
However, some polling units experienced technical difficulties during the accreditation process, with electronic voter verification devices struggling to capture the biometric details of some voters and causing delays in the early hours of the exercise.
The governor urged voters to remain calm, assuring them that no eligible person would be denied the right to vote on account of the technical problems. He added that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had given firm assurances that the malfunctioning devices would be fixed promptly to allow voting to continue without significant disruption. Those already waiting at polling units, he said, would be allowed to cast their ballots once the issues were resolved.
Oyebanji expressed delight at the turnout recorded so far, saying the willingness of citizens to exercise their civic duty was a welcome development for the state.
“The report is positive and voting is going on smoothly. The turnout is also very impressive. I am happy that people heeded my call for them to come out en masse to cast their votes,” he said.
“I want to appeal to our people to be patient, because everyone will vote. I have received assurances from INEC that all those who came out will be allowed to vote.”
