Former Vice President and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, Atiku Abubakar has appointed actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo as his official spokesperson.
Okonkwo announced the appointment in a statement shared on his verified X account on Thursday, expressing gratitude to Atiku for entrusting him with the role.
“I give God all the glory for being appointed by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar as his spokesperson. I thank His Excellency for the immense confidence reposed in me,” he said.
The former Labour Party chieftain described the appointment as evidence of Atiku’s leadership approach, saying the ADC presidential candidate encourages dialogue and constructive engagement instead of taking offence when associates raise genuine concerns.
According to Okonkwo, discussions held with Atiku and other leaders of the African Democratic Congress addressed the political interests of the South-East within the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the current political realities.
He stated that the consultations provided assurances that the interests of the region would be protected despite the challenges posed by the existing electoral framework.
Okonkwo also acknowledged the contributions of Kashim Imam, former ADC National Chairman Ralphs Nwosu, and Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Ekene Onwuka, for their efforts in strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 general election.
He further appreciated his family, supporters and friends for their encouragement and prayers, asking for continued support as he assumes what he described as a challenging responsibility.
The appointment comes weeks after Okonkwo publicly criticised the ADC’s reported consideration of a South-South vice-presidential candidate, arguing that such a move would further marginalise the South-East, which has not produced either Nigeria’s president or vice president since 1999.
Despite his reservations, the party later selected former Rotimi Amaechi as Atiku’s running mate after the former vice president secured the ADC presidential ticket for the 2027 election.
