The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has kicked off the bidding process for hosting rights to the 2028, 2032, and 2036 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), calling on its 54 Member Associations to throw their hats in the ring for a chance to host the continent’s flagship football event.
CAF disclosed this in a statement on its official website, marking the beginning of a race that will determine hosts for three editions of the tournament over the next ten years.
The football body noted that all 54 Member Associations are qualified to submit bids, adding that the selection process is geared toward finding hosts who can deliver top-tier tournaments in line with CAF’s technical, commercial, and operational requirements.
CAF said the bidding framework was put together with input from its independent expert adviser, PwC, along with a team of technical, financial, and legal advisers, to guarantee a selection process that is open, fair, and competitive.
This development comes as focus begins to turn toward the 2027 AFCON, set to be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda from June 19 to July 17, 2027 — the first time the tournament will be held across three East African countries.
In recent years, CAF has worked to boost the tournament’s global standing, recording increased commercial value and higher viewership numbers across TV and digital platforms.
AFCON continues to rank among the world’s most-watched football competitions, with CAF putting its cumulative global television audience at over 3.2 billion viewers, in addition to more than six billion digital views.
