The University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Friday hosted the United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on Africa, Ahunna Eziakonwa, during an official visit to the institution’s Artificial Intelligence UniPod.
Eziakonwa was accompanied by the UNDP Resident Representative in Nigeria, Elsie Attafuah, and other UNDP officials. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Professor Foluso Afolabi Lesi, received the delegation and led them on a tour of the AI UniPod, one of UNILAG’s innovation hubs focused on research, entrepreneurship, and tech-driven solutions to social problems.
The centerpiece of the visit was a demonstration of the AI Robotic Scribe, a voice-to-text assistive tool designed for people with cerebral palsy and other communication challenges. The delegation received briefings on the medical, legal, and technical dimensions of the project, which is led by Professor Chika Yinka-Badejo, Director of the AI UniPod.
Guests also visited other sections of the facility, including the Makers’ Space, Design Studio, Pitch Garage, Conference Room, and Training Room, gaining insight into UNILAG’s broader innovation and enterprise ecosystem.
Eziakonwa praised the work being done at the AI UniPod, calling the Robotic Scribe a clear example of technology solving real-world problems. She said the project reflects the value of investing in research and human capital, especially in using AI to improve lives and drive inclusion.
The visit reaffirmed UNILAG and UNDP’s joint commitment to innovation, digital transformation, and sustainable development.
