The Lagos State Government has held talks with the Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria (AWAMN) and Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators ahead of Saturday’s Monthly Environmental Sanitation exercise.
The meeting, led by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, formed part of ongoing efforts to fix operational issues within the state’s waste management framework.
Wahab said the goal was to build a system that is efficient, sustainable, and accountable, with the review focusing on regulating PSP operators and tackling problems around dumpsites, access roads, drainage, and disposal turnaround times.
He noted that ongoing upgrades at the Solous 3 site in Igando should relieve pressure on other disposal points and improve waste collection, particularly in the Alimosho axis.
The Commissioner said the financial sustainability of PSP operations is also under review, but insisted that any adjustments must come with transparency and quality service delivery.
“Operational challenges cannot be an excuse for failing residents,” Wahab said, adding that every PSP operator must meet its contractual obligations, maintain its fleet, and ensure consistent service.
The government also plans to roll out stronger community-level monitoring to curb indiscriminate dumping and push residents toward using approved operators.
Wahab called for closer collaboration between government, waste managers, and residents to build a cleaner and healthier Lagos.
The Monthly Environmental Sanitation exercise takes place statewide on the last Saturday of every month, with residents urged to clean their surroundings and dispose of waste through approved channels.
