The Federal Government has released the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) covering January to August 2026 to academic staff in federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, disclosed this on Wednesday shortly after inaugurating the Ministerial Committee on Accreditation, noting that the eight-month payment was made in line with the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
CATA is intended to support academic staff with the purchase of materials and tools needed for teaching, research, and other academic duties.
Alausa said the affected institutions have already been notified and are expected to begin disbursing the funds to eligible academic staff. He did not disclose the total sum released or the amount individual lecturers would receive.
While academic staff are set to benefit immediately, the minister said payments to non-academic workers were still being processed, with funds expected to be available within a few weeks.
He described the release as further evidence of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to the welfare of academic and non-academic staff, adding that the administration’s interventions in the education sector extend beyond salaries and allowances to include infrastructure development across tertiary institutions and investments in basic and postgraduate education.
Alausa maintained that the overarching goal of the administration was to improve the quality of education available to Nigerian children, commending Tinubu for what he called transformative interventions in the sector while reaffirming the government’s commitment to honouring agreements reached with tertiary institution workers.
