Singer Bella Shmurda has revealed one of the darkest chapters of his early struggle to break into the Nigerian music industry stealing a neighbour’s bicycle to raise money for studio sessions.
Speaking on the Echo Room podcast, the singer recounted the incident, which happened while he lived in Okoko, Lagos. He said he took the bicycle belonging to his neighbour’s son at night, hid it, and later sold it at Alaba for ₦7,000.
The proceeds went straight into funding his recording sessions at a time when he had no other means of financing his craft.
Bella Shmurda said he has since reconnected with the boy whose bicycle he took and made amends by buying him a new one.
He admitted the confession could land him in trouble at home. “If my mom hears this, she’ll be angry. When we lived in Okoko, I once stole my neighbour’s son’s bicycle and hid it at night. I sold it in Alaba for ₦7,000 to pay for studio sessions. I’ve seen him since and bought him a new bicycle,” he said.
The revelation adds to the growing list of behind-the-scenes stories artists are sharing about the sacrifices made before their breakthrough in the industry.
