The United Kingdom has awarded 68 Nigerians Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships to pursue master’s and PhD programmes in the UK this year.
The British High Commission disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, noting that pre-departure ceremonies were held for the scholars in Abuja and Lagos.
Of the total number, 12 scholars received Chevening awards, while 56 others got the Commonwealth scholarship.
Chargée d’Affaires at the British High Commission in Abuja, Vicky Seymour, congratulated the awardees for scaling the competitive application and interview process, describing their time in the UK as an investment both in themselves and in Nigeria’s future.
She expressed confidence that the scholars would return home and contribute meaningfully, as previous alumni had done.
Chevening scholar Sarah Nathaniel Yanayork, who will study International Human Rights Law at the University of Essex, described her selection as validation of a three-year journey defined by resilience and commitment to change. She said the scholarship goes beyond academics, offering a platform to build global networks and return home equipped to champion good governance.
Commonwealth scholar Abubakar Umar, who will study special educational needs at the University of Exeter, said the award held special significance for him as a person with a hearing impairment, describing it as a journey toward a more inclusive system.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Nigeria now has over 5,237 alumni across both scholarship schemes.
Applications for the 2027/2028 Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships are currently open, with interested candidates advised to apply via the official Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarship Commission portals.
