Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have warned against the formation of parallel political structures that could weaken the party or undermine President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term in 2027.
The position was announced by the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, following a closed-door meeting of APC governors at the Imo State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja.
The declaration is widely seen as a response to the growing activities of the Rainbow Coalition associated with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The coalition has generated concerns within the APC, with some party leaders reportedly worried that alternative political structures could divide support and affect the party’s performance in the 2027 presidential election.
Uzodimma said the governors had unanimously agreed not to support or endorse any political alliance capable of weakening the APC or reducing Tinubu’s chances of securing re-election.
He stressed that APC governors would focus solely on candidates contesting elections under the party’s platform.
According to him, the governors would also take responsibility for mobilising support for Tinubu and other APC candidates across their respective states.
“The APC Governors Forum unanimously resolved that its members will not participate in, support or endorse any alliance or political arrangement capable of undermining the re-election of Mr President, weakening the APC or adversely affecting any candidate of the party at all levels,” Uzodimma said.
He added that the governors would not support candidates outside the APC because the party had already sponsored its candidates for the various elections.
“In other words, the forum has no intention to support any candidate at any level that is not an APC candidate,” he said.
The governors’ position comes as political activities surrounding the 2027 elections intensify, with the Rainbow Coalition reportedly making inroads into several states and attracting politicians from different parties.
Wike, who remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has maintained that the coalition is primarily aimed at supporting Tinubu’s re-election.
However, the growing influence of the coalition has reportedly unsettled some APC stakeholders, particularly in states where political alliances and loyalties are already shifting ahead of the 2027 elections.
The PGF’s latest position therefore signals a determination by APC governors to maintain the party’s structure and ensure that all campaign efforts are channelled towards official APC candidates.
The governors also pledged to align their campaign structures with Tinubu’s re-election strategy and the broader objectives of the ruling party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
