Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo, has taken a swipe at Igbo politicians who built their careers on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) only to abandon it for other parties.
Speaking on Saturday at the Ekwusigo Local Government headquarters in Ozubulu, Soludo said APGA had served as a launchpad to prominence for many Igbo politicians. He described the party as a “visa” that many of them used to rise to stardom.
The governor said it was regrettable that some of those beneficiaries had lost focus, defected to what he called mushroom parties, and now claim APGA has lost its relevance.
Soludo spoke shortly after commissioning projects executed by the outgoing council chairman, Hon. Chinezie Obi.
He also faulted Ndigbo for what he called a habit of putting all their eggs in one basket, then complaining of marginalisation by the federal government.
According to him, the Igbo should now be working to reconnect with the centre and secure their fair share of federal presence by supporting the return of President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He accused some self-serving Igbo politicians of misleading their followers into believing another party could defeat both APC and APGA in the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections.
Soludo said APGA, the dominant party in Anambra, has resolved to back APC for the presidency in 2027. Guided by its “Progressives working together” mantra, he said, the party will also aim to win all national and state assembly seats in the state, as it did in the recent local government chairmanship and councillorship elections.
The governor praised Obi for managing council resources prudently and delivering capital projects, including roads, CCTV cameras and skills acquisition centres. He said this disproved claims that local governments lack the funds for such projects.
Soludo promised to reward Obi generously when he leaves office. He also expressed confidence that the incoming chairman, Hon. Ifeanyi Onuchukwu, would surpass Obi’s achievements.
Obi, for his part, thanked the governor for his leadership and said he leveraged Soludo’s good works to deliver the projects. “What you saw here today is a testament to my vision,” he said.
Onuchukwu said he had already drawn up action plans, based on his manifesto, which he would begin implementing once sworn in.
At the event, the Anambra State Town Union Council (ASTUC) Youth Wing, led by its President-General, Hon. Ken Okoli, presented Community Service Awards to both Obi and Onuchukwu.
