Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has explained why he chose to return to the classroom at the age of 77.
The 89-year-old said he was motivated by a desire to keep learning and to deepen his knowledge of Christian Theology.
Obasanjo pursued his studies at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). He earned a postgraduate diploma in Christian Theology from the institution in 2009, and returned in 2014 to begin a master’s degree in the same field.
Speaking in an interview with Isbae U, the former president said going back to school at an advanced age was also meant to show that education has no age limit.
He added that his interest in the course went beyond acquiring another academic qualification. According to him, he wanted to understand God better and strengthen his relationship with Him.
“I went back to school at 77 years old to study Christian Theology, to show by example that there’s no age limit to education. I also wanted to learn more about God so I could worship Him better, and I enjoyed it,” he said.
