The Deputy Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo, has expressed confidence that her party will win the 2027 governorship election in the state by a wide margin, saying the PDP is not afraid of any litigation that may arise from the outcome.
Sowunmi-Kolapo spoke on the sidelines of the ongoing Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) conference in Enugu on Thursday, reacting to a paper titled “Election Petitions in Digital Age: Independence, Evidence, BVAS and the Courts,” delivered by a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN).
She said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) still has a lot of work to do ahead of the 2027 polls to minimise post-election litigation, arguing that transparent elections naturally reduce disputes.
“When elections become very transparent, most participants usually accede to defeat. Most post-election litigations arise from alleged unfairness and fraud at the polls,” she said.
According to her, the 2027 general elections will no longer just be a litmus test for INEC and the judiciary, but will determine whether Nigeria’s democracy can still stand.
“INEC and the courts must weigh the implications of any intentional denial at the polls. Most Nigerians have lost interest in the elections, but 2027 will determine whether there will be participatory democracy or none again in the country,” she said.
She added that Nigerian youths have “come of age” and are determined to ensure the right thing is done at the polls, noting that the PDP in Ogun State is not just campaigning but also educating residents on their voting rights and how to resist intimidation from non-stakeholders.
Sowunmi-Kolapo also called on the media to play a stronger advocacy role in ensuring credible elections.
While noting that some states may see little contest in 2027, she insisted the Ogun governorship race would be keenly contested, and expressed confidence that “the PDP will emerge victorious.”
“Our people in Ogun state are ready and will do everything lawful to ensure that their votes count in 2027, and they will count,” she added.
