The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu as its substantive General Secretary, making him the first Nigerian to hold the post since the body was founded in 1957.
CAF announced the confirmation on Thursday, months after Adamu took over in an acting capacity following the March resignation of Veron Mosengo-Omba.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) congratulated Adamu, describing the development as a significant moment for Nigerian football administration.
NFF acting General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme said he was confident Adamu would do well and represent both Nigeria and Africa.
“This is, indeed, very good news. I am so happy for Samson Adamu on his confirmation, and I know he is going to make Nigeria and Africa proud,” Ikpeme said.
He added that the NFF would back Adamu in his new role.
Adamu first joined CAF as Director of Competitions and later became Director of Tournaments and Events. He was named acting general secretary on March 29, after Mosengo-Omba stepped down.
In the new role, he will oversee CAF’s day-to-day administration, legal affairs and the implementation of decisions made by its executive committee.
He holds a FIFA Master’s degree in the management, law and humanities of sport. He started out in football administration by founding the now-defunct Copa Lagos beach soccer tournament in the early 2010s.
CAF, Africa’s football governing body, is headquartered in Cairo, Egypt.
