The Ekiti State Police Command has dismissed reports that Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, was kidnapped in Ado-Ekiti.
In a statement on Friday, the Command said it was aware of a social media message claiming that Sowore was abducted by armed thugs and that his whereabouts were unknown.
The police said the claim was false. According to the Command, preliminary information shows that Sowore had an altercation with some people at a restaurant in the Dalimore area of Ado-Ekiti, after which the police were immediately alerted.
Officers mobilised to the scene and rescued him, the police said. He sustained a minor injury and is receiving treatment at the Police Hospital in Ado-Ekiti.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Falade Adegoroye Michael, has ordered a discreet investigation to establish the full circumstances of the altercation, identify everyone involved and ensure that anyone found culpable is prosecuted.
The Command urged the public to remain calm, disregard the kidnapping claim and avoid sharing unverified information that could cause panic and tension.
It said it remains committed to protecting lives and property irrespective of political affiliation, status or background, and to maintaining law and order in the state.
The statement was signed by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Abutu Sunday.
