A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has admitted former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai to bail on Monday, fixing the sum at ₦100 million with one surety required to meet the same amount.
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, who presided over the ruling, attached a battery of stringent conditions to the order — signalling the court’s intent to keep a firm grip on the defendant throughout the proceedings.
The designated surety must be a resident of either Maitama or Asokoro, two of Abuja’s most exclusive districts, and must be a serving federal civil servant of no lower than Grade Level 17. The individual will be required to deposit the original Certificate of Occupancy of a landed property with the court registry, backed by a bank manager’s authentication letter, a signed affidavit of means, a recent passport photograph, and salary records spanning at least three months.
El-Rufai himself faces equally demanding obligations. He must surrender all valid international passports to the court, submit a tax clearance certificate covering the last six months, and provide a letter of attestation from the Chairman of the Kaduna Traditional Council.
Perhaps most notably, the former governor is mandated to physically report to the Department of State Services headquarters every last Friday of the month at 10 a.m. to sign an attendance register — a condition that effectively places him under periodic state supervision for the foreseeable future.
Justice Abdulmalik left no room for ambiguity, warning that any breach of the bail terms would trigger an immediate revocation, with no exceptions indicated.
