The Edo State Police Command has ordered a full-scale investigation into allegations that officers attached to the Okpella Police Division extorted ₦1 million from a group of young men.
The command’s action follows a video that went viral on social media, in which the alleged victims claimed they were arrested by police officers, falsely labelled as cult members, and made to pay ₦1 million before they were released.
The Commissioner of Police in Edo State, CP Patrick Daaor, has directed that the allegation be thoroughly investigated. According to the command, the officers said to be involved have already been identified and summoned to report at the Command Headquarters to explain their side of the story.
The controversy erupted after the young men in the video narrated how they were picked up on suspicion of cultism and allegedly told to pay money before their release.
The Police Public Relations Officer has also called on the alleged victims to appear before the investigating team and formally give their account of what happened.
Reacting to the allegation, CP Daaor said the command would not treat cases of police misconduct, extortion, or abuse of power with levity. He assured the public that any officer found culpable at the end of the investigation would face appropriate disciplinary action in line with the law.
The Commissioner further assured residents that genuine complaints against police personnel would be given full attention and not swept under the carpet.
The command urged members of the public who experience harassment, extortion, or any form of unprofessional conduct from police officers to speak up and report such cases through the Complaint Response Unit, where such matters are received and referred for appropriate action.
The police command noted that the ongoing investigation is aimed at establishing the true facts of the matter and determining whether the accused officers are indeed culpable.
