Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has called on the federal government to urgently review the pay and welfare conditions of Nigerian military personnel, warning that poor remuneration undermines the country’s fight against insecurity.
Speaking in an interview with Trust TV, Ndume said a Nigerian Army soldier currently earns around ₦100,000 per month roughly $80 an amount he described as grossly inadequate given the life-threatening nature of military service.
“It’s unreasonable to expect soldiers to risk their lives, defend the country, and confront security threats while receiving such a small salary,” the senator said.
Ndume argued that better pay and improved conditions of service would strengthen the motivation of troops and enhance overall security outcomes across the country.
