Tope Fasua, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Economic Affairs, has urged Nigerians to adopt prudent spending habits as the country continues to grapple with rising living costs.
Fasua made the remarks during a members-only Coffee Hangout organised by the Kay Hikers Club in Abuja, where discussions focused on the economy, insecurity, and the increasing hardship faced by citizens.
Responding to concerns raised by a female participant over the soaring prices of food and the declining purchasing power of Nigerians, Fasua advised households to adjust their lifestyles to fit their income levels.
According to him, families can still survive despite the harsh economic climate if they manage their resources properly.
“A modest family can survive on ₦10,000 for several days,” he stated during the discussion.
He further encouraged Nigerians to embrace home cooking and avoid unnecessary spending, stressing that discipline in managing finances had become essential.
Fasua explained that he regularly visits markets himself and understands current food prices.
“You must learn to cut your coat according to your cloth. I go to markets like Utako and Wuse myself. I enjoy shopping and checking prices. There are affordable food items people can buy and prepare at home,” he said.
The presidential aide also maintained that while the government recognises the economic difficulties facing citizens, it cannot satisfy every public expectation.
He admitted that prices of goods and services have risen significantly compared to previous years but argued that Nigerians must adapt to prevailing economic realities.
“I understand that things are now more expensive than before, but if everything is exaggerated for sensation, the government will never be seen as doing enough,” Fasua added.
