The Federal Government has announced plans to enhance Nigeria’s cybersecurity coordination through the proposed establishment of a Cybersecurity Coordination Council.
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, disclosed that the initiative will foster collaboration between government institutions, private sector operators, and other key stakeholders to strengthen the nation’s response to rising cyber threats.
He emphasised that cybersecurity is a collective responsibility, noting that protecting Nigeria’s digital economy depends on strong partnerships, mutual trust, and active cooperation across all sectors. According to him, improved coordination will boost early threat detection, ensure swift responses to cyber incidents, and support the development of a secure and resilient digital environment.
Tijani also urged stakeholders to actively participate in building a sustainable, partnership-driven cybersecurity system capable of safeguarding citizens, businesses, and critical national infrastructure.
At the same time, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has commenced an investigation into a suspected data breach involving Remita Payment Services Limited, Sterling Bank, and other entities.
In a statement signed by Babatunde Bamigboye, Head of Legal, Enforcement and Regulations, the commission confirmed that notices of investigation were issued on April 1, 2026, with affected parties already providing relevant information.
The NDPC explained that the investigation will assess the nature and scope of the alleged breach, the categories of personal data involved, potential risks to affected individuals, and the adequacy of measures taken to address the incident.
Furthermore, the commission’s National Commissioner, Vincent Olatunji, has directed a wider review of organisations using digital payment systems to ensure compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, particularly regarding the implementation of appropriate data protection measures.
