A fresh crisis has erupted within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following the controversial suspension of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal by a faction of the party in Adamawa State.
The announcement, made by factional state chairman Muh’d Raji Sulaiman Zumo, has sparked widespread debate and raised questions about the legitimacy and authority of the group behind the decision. The suspension was reportedly based on allegations of “anti-party activities,” although no concrete evidence has been publicly presented.
Zumo, while addressing the issue, insisted that discipline must be upheld within the party, stating that no member is above its rules. However, his declaration has been met with skepticism, with critics questioning whether the action reflects the stance of the ADC’s national leadership or merely that of a local faction seeking influence.
Also affected by the suspension are Engr. David Babalawo and Barr. Sadiq Ibrahim Darsin, both accused of contributing to internal disunity. Observers note that the sweeping nature of the sanctions, particularly against prominent figures like Atiku, points to deeper internal divisions within the party.
Political analysts suggest the development goes beyond routine disciplinary measures, describing it instead as a manifestation of an ongoing struggle for control and relevance within the ADC.
