Human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi, has questioned the process that led to Godswill Akpabio becoming Senate President, describing it as legally and procedurally doubtful.
In an interview on News Central on April 18, 2026, Farotimi said Akpabio’s rise to the position reflects deeper structural challenges in Nigeria’s political and electoral system.
He argued that the current system enables individuals who may not meet all required standards to still occupy key public offices.
According to Cityspy News, Farotimi also pointed to alleged irregularities in the legal and procedural requirements surrounding Akpabio’s eligibility and participation in the process that produced him as Senate President. He claimed that some provisions of the Electoral Act relating to qualification and participation were not properly observed.
He said the situation raises broader concerns about adherence to due process and the consistent application of electoral rules in the country.
“Persons like Akpabio who emerged in the Senate in spite of the fact that he’s not even qualified to run, he was expressively disqualified by provisions of the Electoral Act,” Farotimi stated.
