The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has denied reports suggesting that the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, was invited to participate in the foundation-laying ceremony of an ecumenical chapel at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
In a statement issued through its media office in Abuja, CAN clarified that it did not send any invitation to the Sultan and disassociated itself from the circulating information, describing it as inaccurate and misleading.
The association explained that the document being referenced in public discussions originated from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), and not from CAN. It stressed that at no point did it authorize or issue any communication inviting the Sultan in relation to the chapel project.
CAN expressed concern over what it described as a misrepresentation of facts, warning that attaching its name to the claim could create unnecessary misunderstanding.
The body also cautioned that the spread of such unverified reports could inflame religious sensitivities and heighten tensions within the country. It urged Nigerians to verify information before sharing it, especially on matters capable of causing division.
Reaffirming its commitment, CAN said it remains dedicated to promoting peaceful coexistence among religious groups while safeguarding Christian worship and encouraging mutual respect among citizens.
The association further called on journalists, public officials, and members of the public to rely on verified sources and avoid amplifying unconfirmed claims.
