The Nigerian military on Friday formally inaugurated a General Court Martial to try 36 service personnel accused of involvement in an alleged plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government.
The court martial was set up by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) and convened at the Scorpion Mess in Asokoro, Abuja, under tight security arrangements.
Proceedings were held behind closed doors due to the sensitive nature of the case. Journalists, including accredited defence correspondents who had been invited, were denied entry into the venue.
Security operatives also restricted the use of mobile phones within the premises, preventing any recording of the arrival of the accused officers. The 36 defendants were reportedly conveyed to the location in an Army Headquarters Garrison bus at about 8:53 a.m.
