The United States has reversed course on a contentious immigration policy that had left thousands of foreign-trained physicians including Nigerians in professional and legal limbo, resuming full processing of their visa and work permit applications.
The rollback ends a freeze that had been in place since January, when the Trump administration halted decisions on immigration applications for nationals of roughly 39 countries under travel ban-related restrictions. The pause had rippled through hospitals and clinics across the country, threatening the employment status of doctors who form a critical pillar of American healthcare.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has now updated its guidelines to carve out an explicit exemption for medical physicians. A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson confirmed the shift, stating that applications tied to medical doctors would continue moving through the system.
The relief could not come soon enough. Several affected physicians had been placed on administrative leave, while others teetered on the edge of job loss as immigration paperwork stalled indefinitely. Healthcare administrators had grown increasingly vocal about the strain on medical staffing, particularly in rural and underserved communities already grappling with chronic shortages.
The numbers tell a stark story. The U.S. currently faces a deficit of approximately 65,000 physicians — a gap projected to widen in the years ahead. Foreign-trained doctors make up roughly a quarter of the entire American medical workforce, with a heavy concentration in primary care and in communities that struggle to attract domestic graduates.
For Nigerian doctors and others caught in the freeze, the policy reversal reopens a path forward — allowing pending applications for visa extensions, work permits and green cards to proceed without further interruption.
