The Nasarawa State Police Command has launched a coordinated rescue operation following the abduction of six students of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, by suspected gunmen in Gudi, Akwanga Local Government Area of the state.
The victims were reportedly kidnapped on Wednesday night after armed men stormed a students’ lodge located in Anguwar Ninzo, on the outskirts of Gudi.
Confirming the incident on Thursday in Lafia, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Rahman Nansel, said the attack occurred at about 9 p.m. on May 6.
According to him, the abducted students are from the Faculty of Engineering at the university’s Gudi campus, while another victim was identified as a visitor who was present at the lodge during the invasion.
Nansel disclosed that the Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State, CP Shetima Mohammed, visited the scene of the incident for an on-the-spot assessment and assured residents, students and the university community that security agencies were working tirelessly to secure the victims’ release.
He added that the Area Commander in Akwanga had been redeployed to oversee and coordinate rescue operations in the area.
The police spokesman further revealed that a joint security task force involving the police, Department of State Services (DSS), military, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), vigilante groups and other tactical teams had been mobilised to track down the kidnappers.
“The operation is aimed at rescuing the victims unharmed and ensuring the perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted,” Nansel stated.
He appealed to residents to remain calm and security conscious, urging anyone with useful information to report to the nearest police station or relevant security agency.
The command assured the public that updates would be provided as investigations and rescue efforts continue.
