Nigeria’s new Foreign Affairs Minister, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has hit the ground running after formally assuming office, vowing to steer the country’s diplomacy through President Bola Tinubu’s four-point foreign policy framework.
The Minister was received Friday at the Ministry’s Abuja headquarters by Permanent Secretary Dunoma Umar Ahmed and senior officials from agencies including the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission and the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs.
Ahmed praised the appointment as well-earned, pointing to Odumegwu-Ojukwu’s earlier stint as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs as proof of her diplomatic mettle. He pledged the Ministry’s full backing in defending national interests, deepening global partnerships, and protecting Nigerians living abroad. Agency heads under the Ministry echoed that commitment, promising seamless cooperation throughout her tenure.
Addressing staff for the first time as substantive Minister, Odumegwu-Ojukwu thanked officials for their warm reception and signaled continuity, pledging to consolidate existing gains while charting a more ambitious course.
At the heart of her agenda is the Federal Government’s 4-D framework — Democracy, Development, Diaspora, and Demography — which she described as the cornerstone of Nigeria’s engagement with the world. She called for a Ministry driven by professionalism, innovation, and cohesion, and singled out citizen diplomacy and strategic autonomy as defining pillars of her leadership style.
The Minister also turned attention inward, promising to prioritize staff welfare and sharpen service delivery — a signal that her diplomatic ambitions would be matched by investment in the people tasked with executing them.
