The Minister-designate for Power, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, has dismissed reports claiming he pledged to resolve Nigeria’s power grid challenges within three months.
In a clarification issued through his spokesperson, Adeola Adelabu, Tegbe said the reports were a distortion of comments he made during his Senate screening on May 6, 2026.
The statement, shared on X on Thursday, stressed that the minister-designate never made any such commitment before lawmakers.
“Our attention has been drawn to inaccurate media reports alleging that the Honourable Minister-designate, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, promised to fix Nigeria’s power grid within three months. This claim is a clear misrepresentation of his remarks. At his Senate screening on May 6, 2026, Mr. Tegbe made no such commitment,” the statement read.
According to the clarification, Tegbe told senators that timelines for reforms in the power sector were still under development and would depend on ongoing consultations and technical assessments.
He explained that initial efforts to stabilise the national grid would begin within his first 100 days in office, while broader structural reforms could take up to one year to implement.
The proposed reforms, he noted, would focus on improving grid reliability, addressing gas supply constraints, and expanding electricity metering across the country.
Tegbe was quoted as saying, “My promise to this chamber is that Nigerians will see visible improvement in the sector.”
He also pledged to stabilise the national grid, modernise electricity infrastructure, strengthen commercial frameworks, and enforce accountability across the power value chain. On electricity tariffs, he assured lawmakers that reforms would be designed to protect vulnerable consumers while maintaining investor confidence.
The statement further emphasised his commitment to transparency, measurable progress, and continued engagement with the media on Nigeria’s electricity challenges.
President Bola Tinubu recently nominated Tegbe as Minister of Power following the exit of Adebayo Adelabu during a cabinet reshuffle announced by the Presidency.
Tegbe had earlier appeared before the Senate, where he outlined plans to tackle grid instability, metering shortages, and infrastructure gaps in the electricity sector.
