The Senior Pastor and General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministries International, Apostle Johnson Suleman, has urged President Bola Tinubu to either decisively confront those sponsoring terrorism in Nigeria or step aside for someone who can handle the challenge.
Speaking during a church service focused on the country’s worsening security situation, Suleman said Nigeria must move beyond only arresting armed attackers and instead go after individuals and networks financing and arming terrorist groups.
According to him, the real threat to national security is not only the gunmen carrying out attacks, but those allegedly providing funding, logistics, and weapons behind the scenes. He insisted that identifying, arresting, and prosecuting such sponsors is essential if the country is serious about ending terrorism and violent crime.
Suleman argued that many of the armed groups currently operating were influenced by older networks that were allowed to grow unchecked over the years, stressing that stronger action is needed to prevent the cycle from continuing.
He said: “The sponsors of terrorism are our real problem. Go after them. If the President cannot deal with them, he should resign, let somebody else do it.”
He further noted that many of the attackers are young recruits allegedly linked to earlier generations of violent networks, adding that focusing only on frontline fighters would not solve the crisis.
Despite his criticism, the cleric praised Nigeria’s security forces, including the Army, Police, and Department of State Services, describing them as highly capable based on his experiences abroad. He said they could perform better if given stronger political backing to confront those behind insecurity.
Suleman maintained that insecurity in Nigeria would persist unless those financing and coordinating attacks are exposed and brought to justice, adding that the government must treat terrorism as an organised network rather than ordinary crime.
His remarks add to growing public pressure on the Tinubu administration to intensify efforts against insecurity, as the country continues to face recurring incidents of banditry, kidnappings, and terrorist attacks in several regions.
