A factional chairman of the Labour Party in Nasarawa State, Alexander Ombugu, has raised concerns over an alleged threat to his life, calling on security agencies to urgently provide protection and launch an investigation.
Ombugu made the appeal on Saturday while addressing journalists in Lafia, the state capital, alleging that the threat may be linked to his stance on issues arising from the party’s recently concluded primary elections in the state.
He, however, declined to name those he believed were behind the alleged intimidation, stating that such details would be handed over to security operatives to avoid compromising investigations.
The LP chieftain urged security agencies to intervene quickly, provide him with adequate protection, and ensure a thorough probe into the matter.
According to him, his current ordeal stems from his insistence on what he described as speaking “the truth” regarding internal disagreements within the party, adding that some individuals within and outside the party were unhappy with his position.
He also recounted a recent incident involving his family, claiming that his wife broke down in tears after hearing rumours that he could be attacked.
Ombugu insisted he had not wronged anyone since joining active politics, stressing that he had consistently operated within the laws guiding the Labour Party and Nigeria’s political system.
He said, “The whole issue is because I am standing by the truth, and some people within and outside the party are not happy about it.”
He further appealed for enhanced security coverage and a proper investigation to ensure his safety.
In a recent briefing in Lafia, Ombugu had also called on stakeholders of the Labour Party in Nasarawa State to resolve internal conflicts and embrace reconciliation.
He extended a hand of fellowship to all factions, warning that continued internal disputes could weaken the party’s chances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ombugu, who claims to be the INEC-recognised state chairman of the party, said he remains committed to uniting members and strengthening the party ahead of future elections.
He added that he was ready to engage all leaders and stakeholders in dialogue to resolve outstanding disputes, stressing that peace and unity are essential for the party’s success in the next election cycle.
