Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said he may not contest for president again if he fails to win the 2027 election.
The former Anambra Governor disclosed this during an interview on Nevon HQ, where he responded to a question posed by a secondary school student on whether he would make another presidential attempt should he lose in 2027.
Obi explained that his position is tied to Nigeria’s power rotation arrangement between the North and South. According to him, should he contest and lose in 2027, the presidency would likely shift to the North in 2031 in line with the zoning convention.
He added that by the time power rotates back to the South after that cycle, he would be about 78 years old, an age at which he does not envisage actively pursuing the presidency. This, he said, makes 2027 likely to be his last serious attempt at the office.
“I was asked by a secondary school student if I still intend to run for president again if I contest in 2027 and don’t win, and I said my answer depends on how things play out,” Obi said.
He explained further that Nigeria’s zoning system, which rotates power between the North and South, plays a significant role in shaping political decisions, adding that a loss in 2027 could see the presidency move North in 2031.
“By the time it comes back to the South after that cycle, I will be around 78 years old, and I do not see myself actively pursuing the office at that age,” he said, noting that 2027 could be his last serious attempt based on how the system is structured.
Obi, however, left room for a possible future run, saying that politics could change and that a small possibility of another attempt could exist if the presidency remains in the South after 2027, though it is not something he is banking on.
