The Director of News at Arise Television, Sumner Sambo, has called on the Federal Government and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to explain to Nigerians what transpired in the trial of former Petroleum Resources Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke.
Sambo made the call on Wednesday while featuring as a guest on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme, reacting to reports that a London court had discharged and acquitted Alison-Madueke of all charges after 11 years of legal proceedings.
While acknowledging that the former minister had successfully cleared her name, Sambo maintained that the Federal Government and the anti-graft agency could not simply move on without addressing the public on the outcome.
“The Federal Government and the EFCC owe Nigerians an explanation of what really happened,” he said.
He noted that Nigerians had for years been told a different story altogether — one in which authorities claimed to have recovered assets and valuables linked to the case.
“This is the same case in which they previously informed the public that they had recovered certain assets and valuables,” Sambo said.
The Arise TV news chief stressed that the EFCC and the government now needed to account for the gap between that earlier narrative and the eventual outcome in London.
“They now need to clarify what has changed and why the outcome appears different,” he said, adding that authorities should also state whether all relevant facts had been properly presented to British prosecutors, and why the case ultimately collapsed in court.
