Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has ordered the nationwide enforcement and impoundment of fully tinted vehicles, warning that such cars pose a serious threat to public safety and are routinely exploited by criminal elements.
Disu issued the directive on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN) and members of his delegation, where wide-ranging concerns about police practices were also tabled.
The IGP made clear his personal position on the matter, stating that he would push for a total ban on tinted vehicles if the decision were solely his to make.
“If I have my way, there would be no tinted vehicles in this country. We are moving towards that,” he said.
Disu cited investigations conducted during his tenure as Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory, which revealed that most vehicles recovered from “one-chance” robbery operations had darkened windows. Of 27 vehicles seized, the majority were found to be fully tinted — a pattern he said underscored the direct link between heavy window tints and criminal activity.
He further noted that excessively dark tints, including those applied to windscreens and rear windows, hamper stop-and-search operations and put security personnel at risk. Under the law, only individuals with verifiable security or medical needs are permitted to use tinted glass, and even then, not to the degree that impairs visibility.
