Troops of the Joint Task Force North-East, Operation HADIN KAI, have successfully rescued 53 civilians after disrupting a roadblock mounted by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists along the Buratai–Kamuya road in Biu Local Government Area of Borno State.
The rescue operation took place on June 24 at about 3:45 p.m. after soldiers from the 135 Special Forces Battalion stationed at Echo 1, Dutse Kura, detected suspicious movements through a Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) surveillance system.
According to military sources, the terrorists had blocked the Buratai–Kamuya highway in an apparent attempt to ambush or abduct unsuspecting travellers. Upon identifying the threat, the troops immediately deployed a Quick Response Force to confront the insurgents.
The arrival of the soldiers forced the terrorists to flee towards the Mangari–Dora general area, where they engaged the advancing troops in a fierce gun battle. The insurgents were eventually overpowered and retreated under sustained military fire.
The successful operation led to the rescue of 53 civilians, including 48 adults and five children. Among the adults were 20 men and 28 women. Troops also recovered eight vehicles abandoned during the incident.
Following the rescue, the soldiers advanced approximately 10 kilometres along the route used by the fleeing terrorists, carrying out clearance and domination patrols to ensure the highway was safe for motorists and other road users.
Military sources disclosed that no further contact was made with the retreating insurgents during the operation.
The rescued civilians and recovered vehicles were safely escorted to Buratai, where the travellers continued their journeys without further incident.
The military also confirmed that no personnel were killed or injured and that no equipment was lost during the operation.
Officials described the mission as another significant success in the ongoing counter-insurgency campaign by Operation HADIN KAI, noting that efforts to secure major highways, protect civilians, and restrict the movement of terrorist groups across the North-East remain a top priority.
Although the security situation across the theatre has remained relatively stable in recent weeks, military authorities stressed that troops remain on high alert due to the unpredictable nature of insurgent activities in the region.
