The family of Michael Oyedokun, the schoolteacher killed by kidnappers while in captivity, has expressed both gratitude and grief following the rescue of the remaining pupils and teachers abducted during the May 15 attack on schools in Oyo State.
The victims, who spent 56 days in captivity, regained their freedom on Friday after a coordinated rescue operation carried out by the Nigerian military, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Police Force.
However, for Oyedokun’s family, the successful rescue has been overshadowed by the painful reality that their loved one will never return home.
Oyedokun was among the teachers abducted when gunmen attacked Community High School, Ahoro-Esiele, in Oriire Local Government Area. He was later killed while being held by his captors.
Reacting to the rescue, an Instagram user identified as Oluwabukolami, who described Oyedokun as her uncle, said the family was happy for those reunited with their loved ones but continued to mourn their irreversible loss.
“They are finally home. My heart rejoices with every family that has been reunited with their loved ones after weeks of pain, fear and uncertainty. Welcome home,” she wrote.
“But as others celebrate, my family mourns.
“My uncle, Mr Michael Olugbade Oyedokun, will never come home.
“He was taken from us, and his life was brutally cut short. Our joy is incomplete because one chair at our table will remain empty forever.
“Today, we celebrate those who returned while remembering the one who never did. Rest in peace, Uncle Michael. You will never be forgotten.”
The abduction took place on May 15 when armed men stormed Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, Esiele; and LA Primary School, Ogbomoso, all located in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
While the rescue of the remaining captives has brought relief to many families, the death of Oyedokun continues to cast a shadow over the tragedy, leaving his relatives with a loss they say can never be replaced.
