The Federal Government has approved a reviewed Scheme of Service for the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), in a move aimed at improving the agency’s career structure, enhancing staff welfare and strengthening its capacity to deliver quality meteorological services across the country.
The approval was communicated to the Director-General of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, through a letter dated July 9, 2026, from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). The letter was signed on behalf of the Director of Organisation Design and Development.
Titled “Re-Approval and Forwarding of the Reviewed Schemes of Service for the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet),” the document stated that the approval followed extensive consultations and a comprehensive field study conducted in line with the Federal Government’s approved Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for reviewing Schemes of Service.
According to the government, the revised Scheme of Service is designed to align NiMet’s operational framework with current reforms in the Federal Public Service, address existing gaps in professional cadres, improve career advancement opportunities for employees and reflect the agency’s specialised responsibilities as Nigeria’s leading meteorological institution.
The new framework introduces a structured career progression system that includes Junior, Intermediate and Professional/Officer cadre categories, consistent with existing public service policies.
It also accommodates NiMet’s specialised professional workforce while maintaining uniformity with approved Schemes of Service across the Federal Public Service.
The Federal Government directed NiMet to ensure full implementation of the revised Scheme in accordance with Public Service Rules, establishment circulars and other regulations governing recruitment, promotions, career progression, staff conversion and related personnel matters.
The directive further clarified that officers in the Junior and Intermediate cadres would only be eligible to progress beyond their terminal grade after obtaining the required bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification through the approved conversion or upgrading process.
The latest approval follows the Federal Government’s earlier decision in April 2026 to introduce a unified salary structure and revised Conditions of Service for NiMet employees, which came into effect on June 1, 2026.
Officials believe the reviewed Scheme of Service will strengthen the agency’s human resource management, improve workforce efficiency and support NiMet’s mandate of providing accurate weather and climate information for key sectors such as aviation, agriculture, maritime transportation and disaster risk management.
NiMet also plays a critical role in advising the Federal Government on meteorological issues, collecting and disseminating weather and climate data, supporting scientific research and enhancing the nation’s preparedness for climate-related challenges.
